Thanks to a successful Big Give campaign with our small charity Delia Derbyshire Day, I have been carrying out some consultation with primary school teachers and children to explore the potential of electronic music education to help support children’s music education, wider education and well-being. I’m also enjoying influencing the corridors of power with lobbying for more inclusive, decolonised and up to date music education!

With data analyst and research expert trustees, we designed surveys for children and adults. We then conducted interviews with primary teachers to find out what they want and need to be able to deliver empowering electronic music education. The teachers were all amazingly passionate and dedicated to offering their children the best opportunities for education and life and they valued the power of making music that electronic music education can offer.

The kids’ creative consultation sessions were lots of fun, making word clouds and new music as they influenced the future for electronic music education. I think the most heartening thing the kids said was most of them agreeing with the statement “humans will always be making music, even with AI” in our survey. We will go into another 6 schools in the Autumn Term for taster sessions that will hopefully get them and their teachers started on their (electronic) music adventures.

The consultations and surveys will feed into a forthcoming Electronic Music Education Needs Analysis report that we hope to publish in Oct 2025.  Fellow Manchester music organisation Brighter Sound are compiling the report for us, and One Education Music have supported the project too. We endeavour together to bring opportunity, creativity, confidence and technical skills!
