Another programme of Delia Derbyshire Day wonderful work draws to a close! The work and archive of the late great Delia Derbyshire (which lives at the John Rylands Library here in Manchester) consistently inspired kids and adults alike. We love untapping creativity whilst developing technical skills, championing electronic music/multi-media pioneers past, present and future as well as involving a wider range of people in heritage.
Here’s some offerings from our work this year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us as platforms, project partners, creative professionals and the amazing children! This £55K project was gratefully funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. I was the project manager.
As part of 10 Inspirational Days in primary schools in Manchester, England, 300 schoolchildren aged 9-11 learned about the diverse original Doctor Who production team and how Delia produced the original Doctor Who theme in 1963.
In celebration of Delia Derbyshire Day 2023 and the 60th Anniversary of the Doctor Who theme, I compiled and hosted a DD Day special podcast for Sound On Sound. I spoke with Mark Ayres, David Butler and Cosey Fanni Tutti about the Delia Derbyshire archive and its value today.
Thanks to Jamie Groovement initiating this, we were invited to produce a Delia Derbyshire Day 2023 playlist for the Freak Zone show. It features music by Delia herself, Doctor Who music and sound design over the years, oral history snippets collected this year, our DD Day 2023 commissions and Delia herself thanks to kind permission from John Cavanagh. Available to listen til around 23 December I think, if you can access BBC Sounds or the BBC iplayer.
Again Jamie Groovement supports our work! Firstly, I have a chat with Agent J then 2 of our brilliant DD Day 2023 volunteers Daisy Courtnauld and Will Steele present an hour of Delia and Doctor Who music and chat including playing new music created by emerging artists for Delia Derbyshire Day 2023, inspired by Delia’s archive. In the second hour, Agent J also chats re-presents interviews from our first DD Day event in 2013 with Mark Ayres, Naomi Kashiwagi and Waris Hussein.
